Panthers top Blues on skills, 4-3

In Sunrise, the Florida Panthers and St Louis Blues traded goals all afternoon, but the Panthers got the at trade with a 4-3 win after the skills competition.

Maxim Mamin‘s second goal of the game forced the game into a 3-3 tie and overtime late in the third period.

“I thought the last couple of games he’s been trending,” Florida coach Andrew Brunette said. “I thought ‘Mams’ did a really good job of hounding pucks and staying on pucks.”

Sergei Bobrovsky made 22 saves in the Florida win.

“They stayed with the game plan,” Brunette said. “We played a strong game, regardless of the result. We had the puck all game, it felt like.”

Jake Walman, Logan Brown, and Brandon Saad were the strikers for the Blues.

St Louis dropped to 12-8-4.

Sam Reinhart scored a single marker in regulation, his goal tied the game, 2-2, in the second period.

“They’re a tough team to play against,” Reinhart said. “They don’t give up much. I liked our determination. We were able to get rewarded and win. We felt comfortable. We felt it was our best 60 (minutes) in a while. You’ve got to give credit to them too. It’s not really a shocker it went down to the wire.”

Reinhart was credited with the deciding goal in the skills competition.

The Panthers improved to 17-4-3.

“The goalie played really well,” Blues head coach Craig Berube said. “Guys battled, had to kill some penalties in the third and overtime. They battled. We’ve got to work on some things for sure. We play them again (Tuesday). We’ll look at the tape and we’ll get better.”

Ville Husso made 48 saves in the Blues loss.

“I need to step up and play at a good level every night. It’s nice to get some back-to-back games,” Husso said. “I haven’t played those for a while. I think it’s easier for me to get dialed in right away for games when you play back-to-back games. It was a tight game and kind of disappointing. But, one point, they’re a good hockey team too, and we got one point so we need to look at the positive side.”
