Panthers take tight 2-1 win over Vegas Panthers continue to gain points in Eastern wild card race

In Sunrise, the Panthers picked up another two precious points in a 2-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday evening,

Sergei Bobrovsky made 31 saves in the Panthers win.

“It is huge to have a goalie like that, playing at a level like that,” Florida captain Aleksander Barkov said. “It is amazing, and we are really confident playing in front of him.”

The Panthers improved to 32-27-6.

“Every game is huge for us, and we want to win them all,” Barkov said. “We’re playing one period at a time, that’s what we are doing here. I think we could have played better, especially in that second [period], but [Bobrovsky] was excellent in the game, as always, and kept us in it.”

The Panthers took a 2-0 lead on goals from Ryan Lomberg  in the opening frame, and Barkov in the second stanza.

“We needed a big start, and I think the guys responded,” Lomberg said. “For the last chunk of games, there has been no doubt that guys are going to show up. These are all big games, and this was a big win for us.”

Vegas trimmed the deficit to 2-1 on a power play strike by Shea Theodore  in the middle frame.

“We’ve had stretches where we’ve bounced back really quick,” Theodore said. “I think especially this time of the year that’s what we need to do.”

Vegas dropped to 38-20-6.

“We stayed in the game, which was good,” Vegas coach Bruce Cassidy said. “The way we start, we’re never going to hang our hat on that, that’s for sure. But after the first period, you sort of wonder, how’s it going to go? And we eventually got ourselves in the game just because we were more competitive.

“When we start competing, we have good skill in the room, good talent, and all of a sudden, that’ll start to surface. But you’ve got to be ready when the puck drops. And they were, we weren’t. So, we’ll take that part, the second part of the game.”

Adin Hill made 40 saves in the Vegas loss.
