Panthers survive visit from Golden Knights with 4-3 OT win

A late goal from James Neal helped the Vegas Golden Knights force extra time Friday night in Sunrise; the goal tied their match with the Florida Panthers at 3-3.

But it wasn’t enough to escape with the win as the Panthers’ Aaron Ekblad scored with just 40 seconds gone in the extra session for the 4-3 win.

“It’s huge,” Ekblad said. “We had some unfinished business against these guys but we capitalized on our opportunities going in.”

The Panthers moved to .500 with the win at 19-19-6.

Jamie McGinn, Aleksander Barkov (goal and two assists) and Evgenii Dadonov struck for regulation goals for Florida.

“He’s (Barkov) dangerous 5-on-5 and shorthanded as well,” Florida head coach Bob Boughner said. “He was the best player on the ice tonight.”

James Reimer made 33 saves to pick up the win.

David Perron and William Karlsson also scored for Vegas in regulation.

Vegas dropped to 30-11-4 with the loss.

“I want to be consistent in my game. I’m a goal-scorer. I’ve been fortunate to play with great players along the way,” Neal said after helping the Knights grab the loser’s point.

Malcolm Subban made 22 saves in taking the loss.

“It’s tough. [A] frustrating loss,” Subban said. “Little mistakes I made cost us the game. [There were] a couple of goals I could’ve easily stopped. A few mistakes made the difference.”
