Panthers remain unbeaten on home ice, down Flyers in OT

Home sweet, Sunrise, home.  On Wednesday night, the Florida Panthers won their 11th straight game, 2-1, in extra time over the Philadelphia Flyers.

Aaron Ekblad hit for the game-winner at  2:39 of the extra session.

“He was all around it (tonight), and it was nice to see him get rewarded there at the end,” Panthers head coach Andrew Brunette said of Ekblad.

Sergei Bobrovsky made 32 saves in the Panthers win.

“[Bobrovsky] has been top one, two, three in the League this year so far,” Ekblad said. “He’s been unbelievable. I’m happy for him. He deserves it.”

Florida improved to 14-2-3.

“We’ve had some nights when it’s come easy, but tonight we really had to earn it,” Brunette said. “We dug in and found a way.”

Joel Farabee struck for the Flyers only goal, his marker gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the first period.

“Definitely nice to score but doesn’t mean anything if we don’t win the game,” Farabee said.

Sam Bennett scored in the third period for the Panthers t knot the game, 1-1, and force the extra session.

One more win for the Panthers and they will set a new NHL mark for home wins to start a season.

“That’s great,” Ekblad said. “Tying that is awesome. It’s a very cool thing to do it in front of our fans, and we hope to get another one.”

The Flyers dropped to 8-6-4 and continue to look for their AWOL offense.

Martin Jones made 43 saves in the Flyers loss.

“Guys in front of [Jones] were playing hard and trying to do the right thing,” Philadelphia head coach Alain Vigneault said. “It’s challenging with a team with that skill level and speed coming at you. But for the most part I thought we handled it pretty well.”
