Panthers pass Wings in OT

In Sunrise, the Florida Panthers needed extra time tog et past the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night.

Alex Wennberg scored at 1:25 into the extra session for a 3-2 win.

“It shows a lot of character from the team right here,” Wennberg said. “Obviously it’s not always going to be pretty and it’s not always going our way, but we somehow just keep working and keep doing our part and we get rewarded and we end up getting two points and it’s a huge two points.”

Chris Driedger made 25 saves in the win.

“These are big wins for us,” Driedger said. “We have a lot of key pieces out. I think it says a lot about our team. We’re a hard-working group and nothing really gets us down. We’re down 2-1 there in the third period and we just go to work. We’re not nervous. You can tell the guys have poise out there.”

Adam Erne and Anthony Mantha were the Red wings scorers, they held a 2-1 lead into the third period.

“I thought we worked hard tonight,” the Red Wings’ Luke Glendening said. “Greiss kept us in it and gave us a chance.”

Frank Vatrano made the extra session necessary when he scored off the power play midway through the third period.

“That’s just the way they’re going in for me right now,” Vatrano said. “It’s good to get that goal to tie the game up and a good play all around. But it seems that’s the way it’s going this year. But it’s good to help the team out, and everyone stepped up tonight.”

Noel Acciari also scored for the Panthers in regulation.

“It’s been a very important stretch for us,” Panthers head coach Joel Quenneville said. “I liked how we competed in the games. We’re sticking with it. Games have been close for the most part. Tonight coming back in the third period in a hard game. They worked hard and finding way to stay with it. And big power-play goal off a face-off, and nice goal in overtime. We’re competing.”

Thomas Greiss made 33 saves in the loss.
