Panthers extend Detroit’s woes with 2-1 OT win

Not much is going right in Detroit these days.  On Monday night, the Red Wings lost for the ninth time in 10 games, 2-1, to the Florida Panthers.

Mike Matheson struck at 2:02 in extra time to give the Panthers the win.

Henrik Zetterberg had the lone strike for the Wings.

“We have to figure out what we are doing well and what we aren’t doing and work from there,” Zetterberg said. “We did a lot of good things tonight, but we need those two points.”

The Red Wings dropped to 11-13-6.

“We’re creating chances, but we’re not getting anything into the net,” Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill said. “That’s true for 5-on-5 play, and it is reflected in our power play as well. We’ve done a good job in the offensive zone in our last two games, but we’ve only scored two goals.”

James Reimer made 34 saves to get the win for the Panthers who improved to 12-14-4.

“Reimer was fantastic for us,” Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck said. “We wouldn’t have won that game without all those big saves.”

Trocheck scored for Florida in regulation.

“This was a huge win for us,” Jonathan Huberdeau said. “We needed to pick up some points, and to do it in a division game on the road is even better.”

Jimmy Howard made 27 saves in taking the loss.

“We have to stay professional about this. We can’t start feeling sorry for ourselves or making excuses just because things aren’t going our way. We have to start moving forward,” Howard aid after the loss.
