Three days are in the books for the 2016 NHL free agency frenzy. Now begins the long slog to sign one and two-year deals for two-way players.
Matt Tennyson signed a one-year with the Carolina Hurricanes on Sunday and will be on a two-way deal between the Canes and the Charlotte Checkers in the American
League. Tennyson skated for the San Jose Sharks this past season in 29 games.
The Dallas Stars also went into the two-way dealing pool on Sunday signing centerman Adam Cracknell to a one-year deal which will have him skating in Dallas and Cedar Park for the Texas Stars of the AHL.
The Edmonton Oilers signed Taylor Beck to a one-year deal on Sunday.
One contract extension on Sunday was in Sunrise, Florida where the Panthers extended Reilly Smith’s contract with a five-year deal averaging a reported $5 million annually. Through 82 games last season Smith picked up 25 goals and 50 points and will certainly be a welcome resigning this season as the Panthers appear to be gearing themselves up to build off last season’s regular season success. Their free agency signings and trade efforts make them a stronger team for the coming season. Now they need to have success in the post season and avoid the opening round deflation as they did this year.
