In Ottawa Tuesday night, the Florida Panthers paid a visit to the Senators and left with a 7-2 decision that pushed them to within one point of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
On a night the New Jersey Devils were losing in San Jose, the Panthers broke open a tight game with a four-goal second period.
James Reimer made 33 saves as the Panthers now have a solid one-two punch in net with Roberto Luongo.
“I think these last two games were pretty textbook, defensively,” Reimer said. “Back end of a back to back, obviously, it’s hard and sometimes your legs aren’t there, so you’ve got to be mentally sharp and for the most part tonight the guys did really well.”
Nick Bjugstad, Evgenii Dadonov, Jared McCann, Jamie McGinn, Frank Vatrano, Colton Sceviour, and Keith Yandle scored for the Panthers.
“It’s every game between both of these goalies,” Bjugstad said. “Big saves at key points in the game that we definitely thrive off of. A lot of times it goes the other way and we end up scoring.”
The Senators goals came from Patrick Sieloff and Marian Gaborik.
“Just buying in. I think we have a plan and all the guys that are on the [penalty kill] are dedicated to it and take a lot of pride in it, so it doesn’t matter if it’s a 7-2 game or 1-0, you’re out there sacrificing your body and doing what it takes,,” Reimer said.

Craig Anderson got the start for Ottawa and made 13 saves before being given the hook in the middle frame.
“From the beginning,” Senators head coach Guy Boucher said, “We weren’t good enough. … We gave an opportunity to some players to have more minutes or better roles, a little more ice time, and it was tough for them. It’s an eye-opener for a few guys.”
Mike Condon made 19 saves in relief
