On The Strip, the Vegas Golden Knights skewered the Ottawa Senators, 4-1, on Wednesday night.
The loss was the Sens’ 11th in 13 games.
“I like where we are at the break at Thanksgiving. Things can change, but we put ourselves in a really good spot,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Tonight, we found ways to win and get to our game. Bend but not break at certain times. Timely goals and timely saves make a big difference.”
Logan Thompson made 39 saves in the Vegas win.
The Knights improved to 16-4-1.
Jake Sanderson hit for his first career NHL goal in the Ottawa loss.
“Disappointing,” Senators coach D.J. Smith said. “We hung right with them wire to wire. I don’t know what the chances were, their goalie was really good. Probably too many penalties. We worked hard. We tried everything we could, we just couldn’t score.”
Ottawa dropped to 6-12-1.
Mark Stone staked the Golden Knights to a 1-0 lead in the first period.
Sanderson tied it, 1-1, in the frame.
“It’ll be the first of many,” Smith said. “He played lots of minutes. He was our best defenseman tonight. He is most nights.”
Vegas took the lead for good in the middle frame on a strike from William Carrier for a 2-1 advantage.
“A little bit of black out. I have to recheck it,” Carrier said of the goal. “We’ve been hot right now. Confidence is high. Our line is playing pretty well right now. Find a little bit of a hole, stiff arm and get to the net.
“Before, the first couple of years, they were asking for a different role. Here, coach has me doing a little more. … I’m hot right now. I’m just going to take it.”
William Karlsson scored early in the third for a 3-1 lead to Vegas.
“[Karlsson] had to steal my highlight with his own highlight,” Carrier joked. “I might not make it to the clips here tonight. … ‘Karly’s’ was nice. That backhand is (Sidney) Crosby category.”
Jack Eichel hit an empty-net goal for the 4-1 final.
Cam Talbot made 32 saves in the Sens loss.
