PEORIA, Ill. – The Mississippi RiverKings (20-13-2) opened the weekend road trip with a loss to the Peoria Rivermen (18-6-7) by the score of 4-2 Friday night at the Peoria Civic Center.
Peoria opened the scoring with Garrett Vermeersch crashing the net at 9:21 of the first period. Mike Moran evened the game with a power play goal nine minutes later. Cullen
Bradshaw and Joe Sova recorded assists on the marker. The game remained tied 1-1 after the first period.
Donald Olivieri broke the tie 8:04 into the second period with a blast from the right point. Ryan Marcuz used a screen by Brant Sherwood to score the RiverKings’ second power play goal, tying the game 2-2 halfway through the period. Olivieri scored again on a one-timer from the blue line at 17:09. Peoria took a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
A power play goal by Olivieri at 4:11 of the third period gave him a hat trick, extending the Rivermen lead to 4-2. Mississippi played with an extra attacker for over a minute but were unable to score again. Peoria earned their fourth win over Mississippi in seven games this season.
Brad Barone (12-9-2) stopped 21 of 25 shots faced in the loss. Peoria goaltender Storm Phaneuf (2-3-0) made 31 saves in the victory
