NEW YORK – The NHL Draft lottery took place Saturday night in the big apple, New York, not too far from where the Pittsburgh Penguins played the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Sidney Crosby was once the new “Kid” on the block when the Penguins took him first overall 10 years ago. Steeltown’s new found savior became the NHL’s best player in no time and a franchises fate was changed forever.
Tonight the Edmonton Oilers, once the proud owners of the likes of some of the league’s all-time players, such as Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, will be the new home of Connor McDavid for at least the next 10 years. The Buffalo Sabres were once again snake bitten by losing out on McDavid but should come away with a nice consolation prize in Jake Eichel from Boston University. In any other season you can bet he could very well could go # 1 to some lucky team but this isn’t a bad thing to be # 2 if you’re a Buffalo franchise looking to change their stars.
Here is the top 14 picks in the upcoming draft according to the teams that did not make the playoffs:
11. Florida Panthers
12. Dallas Stars
14. Boston Bruins
The rest of the draft order will be filled in as the playoffs go along. The draft is set for June 26-27 in the Florida Panthers backyard in Miami, Florida.
