In Montreal, it wasn’t much of an extra session, but Dominik Kahun made the most of the 27 seconds and deposited the game-winning goal for the Edmonton Oilers for a 4-3 win over the Canadiens on Wednesday night.
“[Winnipeg is] a great team,” the Oilers’ Alex Chiasson said. “I thought going into this year they got really deep up front, three really good lines. If I’m not mistaken, [Connor Hellebuyck] won the Vezina a few years ago, last year, so they’ve got some good, young defensemen back there. It’ll be a great match for us. We’ve worked a long way this year and in the past to be where we’re at now, and we’re excited for the opportunity.”
Mike Smith made 26 saves to earn the win.
Connor McDavid had two assists for the Oilers to give him 104 points on the season.
“There’s some nights, to tell you the truth, I look and the amount of chances McDavid creates on the ice, you wonder why he doesn’t get more points,” Edmonton head coach Dave Tippett said. “But he’s had a phenomenal year. He’s the leader of our group in a lot of different ways: his play, his leadership on and off the ice. So between him and Leon (Draisaitl), they really drive our offense and they’ve had superb years.”
Nick Suzuki struck for two goals for the Canadiens, and Cole Caufield added a single marker in the loss.
Chiasson and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for the Oilers
The Canadiens will face the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
“It’s special to be part of a series like this,” Montreal’s Ben Chiarot said. “Every time I think about it, it makes me more mad that there won’t be people in the building, because you can just think about how electric the buildings would be going back and forth for a series like this. So it’s going to be fun and I’ll remember it well after my career is done for sure.”
Leon Draisaitl gave the Oilers a 3-2 lead in the middle frame.
Suzuki scored in the third to tie the game at 3-3 and force the game into the extra session.
“I thought we had a great game, creating a lot,” Suzuki said. “The chemistry is going to keep getting better and he sees the ice really well. He’s always ready to shoot, and I like playing with guys like that.”
Cayden Primeau made 18 saves in the loss.
