Oilers tie it late, down Panthers in OT, 4-3

In Edmonton, the Oilers’ Evan Bouchard scored with five seconds left in regulation on Monday night to tie the Florida Panthers, 3-3, and force extra time.

In the extra session, Leon Draisaitl  hit for the winner with just 22 seconds of extra time elapsed for the win.

“It’s a good way to stick with it,” Draisaitl said. “Not our A game, obviously. But you have to win games in this league playing your B game. So, take the two points, clean a couple things up and keep going. … It was a mature game. We didn’t force it.”

Stuart Skinner made 25 saves in the Oilers win.

Connor McDavid had the primary assist on each of those goals.

Edmonton improved to 12-10-0.

“We had to find a way to muck through the slop of the game, so to speak,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “In the end, that game that was just played was worth two points. We felt that if we could turn it up in a few areas, those two points could be ours.”

Florida dropped to 10-8-4.

“They’re two dynamic players. They’re a lot to handle,” Florida coach Paul Maurice said of McDavid and Draisaitl. “They got them the lead, tied the game and won the game for them. … Our goaltender was fantastic tonight. At 2-1 in the third, we found a way to get the lead back, and that’s a tough one when you lose it with five seconds on the clock.”

The Panthers took a 3-2 lead with less than five minutes left in the third period, on a goal from Brandon Montour.

The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a strike from Matthew Tkachuk .

McDavid tied it it, 1-1, midway through the first period on a breakaway.

“It was kind of a weird one from our group,” McDavid said. “I thought we were kind of lethargic. We seemed to kind of hang in there. We always talk about winning with your B and C game. I thought, for a large part of the night, we didn’t have our game.”

Following a scoreless second period, Tyson Barrie put the Oilers up, 2-1, in the third period.

With nine minutes left in the third, Florida’s Anton Lundell  tied the game, 2-2.

“It was two good teams. So close,” Lundell said. “I think, overall, it was a good effort and a good game for us.”

Spencer Knight made 36 saves in the Panthers loss.

“Obviously, they have a pretty good team with some very dangerous players,” Florida’s Aaron Ekblad said. “We felt it from everywhere tonight.”
