Oilers thrash Sharks, 6-1 Oilers close gap atop Pacific

In San Jose, the Edmonton Oilers Connor McDavid hit for a double and three points on Saturday in a 6-0-1 win over the Sharks.McDavid now has 151 points on the season.

“A special player joined an elite group of players in the history of the game,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. “Obviously, what drives him is making sure that the team wins. That’s a big reason why we won today.”

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored in the first period to give the Oilers a 1*0 lead.

Tomas Hertl, who was the lone striker for the Sharks, tied the game, 1-1, in the first.

“I thought for certain periods in the game we were good, and then for long stretches they controlled it,” San Jose captain Logan Couture said. “They have some special players over there who made some plays tonight.”

McDavid scored to give the Oilers a 2-1 lead coming out of the first period.

Zach Hyman and Derek Ryan scored in the middle frame to push the Oilers advantage to 4-1 after 40 minutes of play.

“We’re playing well,” McDavid said. “You never know how high the ceiling is, but that’s what makes this game fun. We’re playing really well. We’re putting wins together. That’s all you can ask for this time of year.”

Philip Broberg scored midway through the third period to balloon the advantage to 5-1, and McDavid hit a late goal for the 6-1 final.

James Reimer made 29 saves in the loss.

“That [third] goal and then the short-handed goal that made it 4-1 really demoralizes you,” Sharks coach David Quinn said, “because I thought up to that point we were competing and giving ourselves a chance.”
