In Edmonton, Leon Draisaitl , who snapped a goal drought in the previous game with the Ottawa Senators, really put an exclamation point to the change with three goals in the rematch on Wednesday night.
Draisailt’s third goal made the score 7-0 early in the third period.
“I thought our start was really good and we put them on their heels a little bit early on, and that helps a lot,” Draisaitl said. “We had contributions from all four lines, defensemen, and [goalie Mike Smith] was great, so it was a pretty complete effort.
James Neal Connor McDavid and Darnell Nurse also scored for the Oilers.
“[McDavid] is obviously a fun player to be on the ice with,” Draisaitl said. “We have a good connection, good chemistry, and it’s definitely fun to play with him.”
The Oilers got out of the first period leading 4-0.
“The whole game, we just didn’t play the right way and we just didn’t eliminate anybody,” Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. “We didn’t stop anyone in the [defensive] zone, and we were easy to play against. We didn’t look like we had a lot of jam, and they did. They had good legs, they jumped on every puck and they were ready to play, and we weren’t.”
Mike Smith made 21 saves for the win.
Edmonton improved to17-11-0.
“They’re a power team, they have so much skill up front and they’re hard to play against and hard to defend,” the Senators’ Thomas Chabot said. “You know these guys are going to score, they’re going to have chances, they’re going to have looks, and that’s what we have to do. We have to limit those, we have to play them harder.”
Jujhar Khaira also scored for Edmonton.
“[Draisaitl] is such a strong player,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. “He holds the puck, he uses his body well, forehand, backhand, it doesn’t seem to matter to him. He’s got so much poise in tight spots. He’s an elite player. When you put the two of them together [with McDavid], it’s a pretty lethal combination.”
Evgenii Dadonov stopped the Oilers run with a goal in the third after Draisaitl’s hat trick.
Matt Murray made 29 in the loss.
“That’s not acceptable one bit,” the Senators’ Mike Reilly said. “It’s on every single guy. It’s not the coaches at all, it’s on us. It’s pretty embarrassing, and I feel like we’ve moved passed not having games like that. Regardless of who we play we’re always in games, and tonight that wasn’t the case.”
