Oilers stump Bruins, 5-3

In Boston, a three-goal third period by the Edmonton Oilers led them to a 5-3 win over the Bruins on Thursday night.

Leon Draisaitl hit for two of those three goals as the Oilers rallied back from 2-3 deficit in the second period.

“There’s lots of things that I think we can clean up, especially in the second period,” Draisaitl said. “It says a lot about our group, that we don’t stop, continue to play our way and try to stick with it, even if it’s not pretty. At the same time, I think there’s lots of things we can improve on so we don’t have to score five goals to win every game.”

Mikko Koskinen made 26 saves in the Oilers win.

“We absolutely beat ourselves tonight, 100 percent,” Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We’re not good enough to make some of the plays we’re trying to make. That’s on us to make sure we’re playing the right way. … Not everyone can be [Patrice] Bergeron’s line. Not everyone can play like McDavid. We’ve addressed it, but clearly it’s fallen on deaf ears.”

David Pastrnak and Brad Marchand helped the Bruins take a 2-1 lead in the first period.

Between those Bruins goals Evan Bouchard scored for the Oilers.

“Boston is a good team. They’ve got some high-end players there,” Oilers head coach Dave Tippett said. “[Draisaitl] gets up for these games. He wants to play in the real competitive games and that’s where he’s at his best. He was really strong tonight.”

In rapid succession, Zach Hyman tied it 2-2 just 24 seconds later for Edmonton.

Brandon Carlo scored to put  Boston back on top, 3-2.

Edmonton’s Cody Ceci scored late in the third period for the 5-3 final.

Linus Ullmark made 23 saves in the Boston loss.

“It [stinks], especially when you feel like you have a good grasp of the game, and it slips away at the end,” Ullmark said. “To be completely honest, today was just one of those days where there were some unlucky bounces. What are you going to do about it? There were some breakdowns, but it’s going to happen. It’s not the end of the world. It’s early in the season. Learn from your mistakes and move on.”
