In Columbus, the Edmonton Oilers fought back from a four-goal deficit on Saturday afternoon with four goals in the middle frame to tie the Blue Jackets, 4-4, headed to the third period.
Jack Roslovic scored twice in the third period to give the Blue Jackets a 6-4 lead en route to a 6-5 win over the Oilers.
“Anytime we can get a win, it’s uplifting. It’s good for all the guys,” Roslovic said.
Zach Hyman scored late for the Oilers and the 6-5 final.
“It was an embarrassing start and then it’s an embarrassing finish. Not quite good enough,” the Oilers’ Connor McDavid said. “They skated well. They are a fast team. They work hard and did a lot of good things early on. We did a good job taking over the game the last 30 minutes. We came up short.”
Joonas Korpisalo made 42 saves. in the Blue Jackets win.
Columbus took a 1-0 lead in the first period on Kirill Marchenko‘s first goal of the game in the first period.
“It’s a fun a game. So many goals make it fun,” Marchenko said. “It was a good game, an important game for us.”
Boone Jenner pushed the lead to 2-0 off a power play goal, Marchenko and Patrik Laine scored for a 4-0 lead in the second.
Columbus improved to 19-35-5.
“They were peppering us,” Blue Jackets coach Brad Larsen said. “‘Korpi’ really stood tall, and then we made them pay for a couple of mistakes, that was that key, Jack with two huge goals.”
The Oilers rallied with four straight goals in including a double from McDavid.
“I know we mounted a comeback and we had some people that had some good efforts, but not enough. Too many passengers today for us,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “And in the end, not detailed enough, and we were made to pay. We beat ourselves today in a lot of ways. … All credit to Columbus for playing hard. Certainly, we’re respectful of that, but I believe we beat ourselves today.”
Warren Foegele started the rally to cut the Columbus lead to 4-1.
“We’ve got to show up on time,” Foegele said. “I didn’t think enough of us did that. As a group, we just got to we’ve got to show up for a full 60. We kind of left [Campbell] out to dry there.”
Leon Draisaitl scored off a power play to trim the deficit to two, before McDavid hit for his double and a 4-4 tie.
The Oilers dropped to 32-20-8.
“Connor played very hard and tried to do things to spur the team on, but again, it’s the National Hockey League, you need all 20 people in the lineup to find ways to contribute to the win,” Woodcroft said.
All four goals from the Oilers came in a span of eight minutes.
Jack Campbell got the start in the Oilers net but surrendered four goals, making 10 saves before getting the hook in the second period.
Stuart Skinner made 10 saves in relief of Campbell.
