Oilers rally in third to down Ducks, 5-3 Kane hits for hat trick in Oilers win

In Anaheim, the visiting Edmonton Oilers scored three straight goals in the third period to overcome a 3-2 deficit and take a 5-3 win over the Ducks on Friday night.

Evander Kane hit for a hat trick in the win.

“Nine years in the League and I didn’t have a hat trick, so I was just hoping I’d get one at one point,” Kane said.

Calvin Pickard made 24 saves in the win.

The Oilers moved to 30-16-1.

The Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the opening stanza on a strike by Cam Fowler at 18L40.

Kane potted his first of the night midway through the second period to tie the game, 1-1.

The Ducks replied with a goal by Ryan Strome 29 seconds later, to give Anaheim a 2-1 lead.

“Obviously nice to get on the score sheet, but frustrating game,” Strome said. “We deserved a little better fate. I thought we worked really hard, we did a lot of really good things.”

Kane hit for his double at 12:51 to knot the game, 2-2.

“As the game went on, we built up our game,” Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch said. “Definitely, the second period was our best, but we had some breakdowns and we were under pressure.”

Strome scored his second of the game at 3:20 of the third period to give the Ducks a 3-2 lead.

“Hockey’s a funny game,” Strome said. “You get a little confidence and the net looks a little bit bigger.”

The Ducks dropped to 18-31-2.

“I think all four lines were good,” Anaheim coach Greg Cronin said. “I had no problem playing [the fourth line] against Draisaitl and McDavid either. I thought they all took the challenge. We had kind of a community strategy against McDavid and Draisaitl, and I think they did a pretty good job.”

After Strome’s double, the Oilers scored three straight.

Connor McDavid tied the game, 3-3, at 8:41 of the third period.

Leon Draisaitl pushed the game-winner midway through the third for a 4-3 lead.

“They’re a good hockey team, they’re on a [heck] of a roll right now and they’re finding ways to win,” Strome said. “You give that team a power play in the third period, more often than not, it’s going to be a goal.”

Kane potted an empty-net marker with 70 seconds left in the game, for his hat trick and the 5-3 count on the scoreboard.

John Gibson got the start, and made 19 saves through two periods of play. He left the game in the second intermission for cramps.

“I thought we deserved the win today, but they’re a good team,” Anaheim’s Leo Carlsson said. “They have two of the best players in the world.”
