Oilers hand Ducks Game 1 loss Larsson scores game winner late to dull Ducks rally

In Anaheim Wednesday night, Cam Talbot made 33 saves to backstop the Edmonton Oilers to a 5-3 win over the Ducks.

Adam Larsson struck twice for the Oilers in the series opening win.

Larsson broke a 3-3 tie late in the third period off a deflection in front of the Ducks net.

“That was probably the best-case scenario,” Larsson said. “I was just trying to get a scrum there in front of the net and I was lucky they kicked it in.”

Ryan Getzlaf staked the Ducks to a 1-0 lead but the Oilers scored three straight to take a commanding 3-1 lead.

Patrick Eaves and Jakob Silfverberg scored in the final frame to get the Ducks even before Larsson’s goal.

“We didn’t have our position in the neutral ice,” Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle said. “There’s no way we should allow Larsson to skate from the top of his circle into our zone unimpeded. We fell back and gave him the room that was necessary.”

Leon Draisaitl struck for a goal and four points in the win and Mark Letestu scored twice for the Oilers.

John Gibson took the loss on 27 saves.

“Getzlaf, I thought, had a big game for us. I moved Rakell up with him in the third period … and I didn’t think we were getting enough from our group. I tried to stimulate some other people to get involved in the game. I didn’t think we had a full contingent of people playing to their highest level, that’s for sure,” Carlyle said breaking down the game.
