Oilers hand Chicago 2-1 OT loss

In Chicago Sunday, Connor McDavid scored with less than a minute gone in the extra session to send the Edmonton Oilers to a 2-1 win over the Blackhawks.

“We got some skill, we got some skill,” McDavid said. “Even if it’s not me and Leon, it’s [Ryan Nugent-Hopkins], it’s some of our D jumping in. It’s up and down the lineup, so we got skill. We know how to play 3-on-3. It’s a different style of hockey that we seem to understand.”

Cam Talbot made 31 saves to pick up the win as the Oilers improved to 6-3-1.

“That was an exciting game,” Talbot said. “A tough game for goalies. Both guys had to make a bunch of key stops tonight and make it 1-1. Those are the games that you want to be in against a team like that on the road in a tough building. It’s my job to make those stops and give us a chance like I did tonight, and the guys rewarded me.”

Brent Seabrook had the only goal for the Blackhawks.

“I mean, he’s one of the best passers in the world, so when he’s got the puck on his stick, you’re just trying to get open,” Seabrook said. “You’re just trying to find a space to shoot the puck. Chances are, nine times out of 10 he’s going to find you, put it right in a good spot for you to shoot it. That’s what everybody is trying to do on the power play for sure.”

Zack Kassian scored for the Oilers in regulation to tie the game 1-1.

“I thought [goalie Cam Talbot] maybe had to work a little harder than [Blackhawks goalie Cam] Ward did tonight. It was a real good night, two nights in a row for our goaltenders (Mikko Koskinen made 24 saves against the Predators for his first NHL win since Feb. 11, 2011). And that’s a real positive sign when you can get two of them to perform like that,” Oilers head coach Todd McLellan said after the game.

Cam Ward made 24 saves in the loss.

“I think we’re still trying to build that identity. But we know that when we play with pace and we’re smart with the puck, we’re good defensively and are getting pucks out when we need to get them out, and getting them in when we have to get them in, we’re a lot harder to play against, as opposed to the other way. … When we have that checking mentality, we can play with any team,” Duncan Keith said.
