Oilers end skid with OT win over Blackhawks in Chicago

With 16 seconds left in extra time, Mark Letestu scored a power play goal for the Edmonton Oilers to help them break a four-game skid in a 2-1 win over the Blackhawks in Chicago Thursday night.

Patrick Maroon scored in regulation for the Oilers.

“In a tough building against a good team, I thought we played the whole game,” Letestu said. “We were tighter. The penalty kill came up with some stops, finally. The goaltender was solid for us and our power play got us a big goal. Things that had been a recipe (for success) for us in the past, was finally here now. We felt more like ourselves, which is nice.”

Cam Talbot was back in the Edmonton nets Thursday and stopped 30 shots for the win.

“[Talbot] could have cracked after giving up the first on the first shot,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “But after that he looked more like he did most of last year, and our team looked a little better than it did the last few games. Maybe it all goes together.”

Patrick Kane had the lone strike for the Hawks in the loss; his goal gave Chicago a 1-0 lead.

The Blackhawks went scoreless in five power play chances.

“We had some great looks around the net. There was a lot of loose pucks, we just didn’t find, handle or weren’t anticipating or sniffing them up around the net. We had some close looks but no finish,” Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville said of the special teams.

The Oilers went 1-for2 on the power play.

“Yeah, we had a lot of chances, we made plays to the net, we just didn’t capitalize on the power play, which would’ve been the difference,” the Oilers’ Ryan Hartman said. “We have a chance on the 5-on-3, which would’ve been nice, just some chances all around.”
