Oilers edge Tampa, 3-2 Lightning continue to struggle for consistency -

In Tampa, Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid  scored in the middle frame on Tuesday night to give the Edmonton Oilers a 3-1 lead over the Lightning.“Everyone on our team and within our organization and most people in Edmonton are thinking about Evander Kane,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. “When an accident like that happens on the ice that’s where our first thought is. Shout out to the great medical staff we have in our organization and people here at the arena that were quick to respond.”

In a tight affair, Alex Killorn scored 46 seconds into the third period to get the Lighting within one  at 3-2.

“They beat us in the special teams battle big time,” Killorn said. “Letting in the short-handed goal and letting two [power-play] goals in. Not good enough. The second period killed us and that was the decision-maker in this one.”

Jack Campbell made that score stand up for the win, he 35 saves for the Oilers win.

“I thought the guys played great, the PK was amazing tonight,” Campbell said. “We got a big shorthanded goal too from [Foegele] and were able to come away with a big two points.”

The Oilers took a 1-0 lead in the first period off a goal from Warren Foegele.

“We got in real late after losing a tough one last night,” McDavid said, referring to a 5-4 loss to the Washington Capitals on Monday. “I thought the boys battled hard and found a way to win. It’s nice to show we could play a little defense after we had a couple games in a row where it got away on us.”

The Lightning dropped to 7-5-1.

“It’s tough to come back in this league, it’s much easier to play with the lead than without it,” Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. “Again it comes down to we’re just giving up one too many goals.”

Brandon Hagel tied the game, 1-1, midway through the opening period.

“We’ve got to be better, 5-on-5 we’ve got to get some depth scoring,” Tampa’s Pat Maroon said. “I thought we had a really good 5-on-5 game. We were getting chances and getting looks. I need to get in front of the net more.”

The Oilers improved to 8-6-0, and ended a three-game skid.

Andrei Vasilevskiy made 26 saves in the Tampa loss.
