In Tempe, Matias Maccelli and Barrett Hayton each scored their second goals of the game, 58 seconds apart, in the third period to rally the Coyotes to a 4-4 tie with the Edmonton Oilers on Monday night.
Oilers replied with a power play goal from Ryan Nugent-Hopkins at 12:05 of the third for a 5-4 lead, and final score in the Oilers win.
Connor McDavid picked up an assist in the win for his 140th point of the season.
“I saw someone grab a puck and I said, `Which milestone is that?,'” Edmonton forward Nick Bjugstad said. “You just like being on the same side as these guys [McDavid and Leon Draisaitl].”
Jack Campbell made 29 saves in the Oilers win.
“In the second period we locked it down, built a two-goal lead, but then we had a couple of shifts in the third period we’d like back. But we got it under control at the end,” Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. “It’s not a perfect game, but we walked out with two points and we’ll take it.”
Edmonton improved to 42-23-9, and extended their point streak to seven games.
The win also pulled the Oilers to within three points of idle Los Angeles Kings for second in the Pacific Division.
The Coyotes dropped to 27-35-13 off their fifth straight loss.
“They kind of hemmed us in on a few shifts [in the third] and we kind of we lost our momentum, but you weather the storm,” said Oilers forward Zach Hyman,. “We got some big special teams goals, and that changes the game. We got a big two points, and we’ll keep rolling.”
Maccelli and Hymantraded goals in the first period for a 1-1 tie.
“He had two goals playing McDavid, and you should get an award just for that,” Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny said. “He played really good defensively, and now he’s learning to put more pucks on the net and he is successful.”
Hayton and the Oilers’ Evan Bouchard scored 35 seconds apart for a 2-2 tie.
Daniel Nurse hit for a shorthanded goal with just over a minute left in the first for a 3-2 advantage to the Oilers.
“Yeah, it’s cool that [No. 300] is a nice milestone to hit,” Draisaitl said. “Hopefully that wasn’t [the last].”
Leon Draisaitl scored in the middle frame to give the Oilers a 4-2 lead.
“There were a couple of shifts in the third where they made us pay, and there were couple of individual situations around our net that can be handled better,” Woodcroft said. “They’ve got some dangerous people there, they’re a good, young, skilled team.”
Karel Vejmelka made 24 saves in the Coyotes loss.
“Obviously, the last two games our fight in the third period has been really good,” Hayton said. “But the first period cost us tonight. I’m super proud of the fight we put up, but it’s frustrating giving up that first period like we did.”
