In Pittsburgh, visiting Edmonton Oilers got a stellar effort from Mike Smith who made 51 saves in a 2-1 win over the Penguins in extra time.
“It was obviously a pretty busy night for me,” Smith said. “You never know what’s going to happen when you get into a game. Tonight, they came at us hard and kind of put us back on our heels to start. We stuck with it and found a way to get two more big points.”
Leon Draisaitl connected midway through the extra session to give the Oilers the win.
“It’s fun. If you win, it’s fun,” Draisaitl said. “It can be exhausting, but it’s a good win for us.”
Colby Cave scored in regulation for Edmonton.
“They were quicker than us, but we hung around the game and found a way to get points,” Oilers coach Dave Tippett said. “That’s what it’s about.”
Brian Dumoulin scored the lone goal for the Pens on a shorthanded strike.
“It’s a low-scoring game,” Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said. “I thought we generated a lot of chances, but it was a low-scoring game. So the margin for error is slim. I thought Matt made some timely saves for us. … There was a lot of the game that we liked about our team. I know we can get better in certain areas.”

Matt Murray made 26 saves in the loss.
“We worked hard,” Sidney Crosby said. “We had some really good chances, and unfortunately, didn’t execute. But we had enough chances to win the game. … Both goalies played really well. We couldn’t find a way to get more than one.”
