In Edmonton, Connor McDavid scored his 57th of the campaign, and collected an assist for 131 points on the season in the Oilers 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars.
Stuart Skinner made 25 saves in the Edmonton win.
The Oilers improved to 38-23-8.
Warren Foegele scored just past the midway point of the first period to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.
Mattias Janmark scored the first of his double at 15:53 of the first for a 2-0 advantage coming out of the first period.
“It’s fun playing your old team, you put a lot of effort in those years with those clubs, then you go somewhere else and you circle those games in your calendar,” Janmark said. “I thought my game today was pretty average, to be honest, but found the net two times. That’s just the way it goes.”
Dallas dropped to 37-19-13 off their second straight loss.
“I think they played a pretty tight game, for the most part,” Dallas forward Joe Pavelski said. “They got those first two and the game kind of evened out a little bit. We got a big one in the third to pull within striking distance and then they capitalized on the power play. We probably weren’t on the inside enough, didn’t execute enough at times.”
Wyatt Johnston scored at 9:49 of the third period to trim the deficit to 2-1, but McDavid potted his goal to push the lead back to a two-goal advantage.
“That’s a tough team to play against, they have a lot of skill and play the game the right way,” Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse said. “We battled, and once we were in the driver’s seat, we didn’t give it up. [Skinner] made some huge saves for us and I thought we defended really well in our own zone.”
Janmark added his double into an empty net for the 4-1 final at 17″17 of the third.
“They’re a good hockey team, they do a lot of good things, they’re a playoff-style team,” Edmonton coach Jay Woodcroft said. “I don’t think they give much away for free. You have to earn every square inch of the ice with the Dallas Stars, and I thought we were patient and showed a level of endurance. In the end, we did more good things than not and found a way to walk out of here with two points.”
Jake Oettinger made 26 saves in the loss.
“Getting in the hole in the first period and playing behind again just like the other night [5-2 loss at Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday], it’s not a good recipe for us,” Stars coach Peter DeBoer said. “You have to score more than once to win, and I didn’t think we did enough to get to the net, to get inside to penetrate to score.”
