Oilers claim 5-2 win over Mavericks

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. – The Tulsa Oilers picked up their second straight road win of the year, scoring two power play goals to defeat the Kansas City Mavericks in front of an announced crowd of 1,302 fans at Cable Dahmer Arena on Wednesday night.

The Mavericks struck first on Darik Angeli’s first goal of the season 12:47 into the first period, assisted by Willie Corrin and Marcus Crawford. Angeli worked in on net from the left wing circle and fired a shot that beat Oilers netminder Mason McDonald on his glove side to make it 1-0.

The Oilers answered 1:09 later, when Jimmy Soper found the net at 13:56 on assists from Carson Denomie and Trey Phillips. Denomie gained the Mavericks zone and marched into the slot where he found Soper, who tucked the puck into the net for the game-tying goal.

Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play while Kansas City out-shot Tulsa 12-10.

The Oilers took the lead 7:53 into the second period when Jack Doremus deflected a Mike McKee shot from the left point past Mavericks goalie Angus Redmond to make it 2-1.

Kanas City responded with a power play goal from Lane Scheidl at 13:28 to tie the game. Scheidl was in the right place at the right time, as a shot ricocheted off the cross bar to Scheidl, positioned on the right side of the crease. Scheidl then batted the puck out of mid-air and into the net to make it 2-2.

Tulsa added a 4-on-3 power play goal at 15:16 from Nathan Larose to claim a 3-2 advantage. Just eight seconds after Crawford went off for a high stick, Larose found the top right corner of the net from the left circle. The goal was assisted by Jarod Hilderman and Dylan Sadowy.

The physical play ramped up in a second period that saw brief delays for injuries to both goaltenders. Redmond was able to stay in the game, while moments later McDonald would be helped off the ice with Daniel Mannella taking over between the pipes. Kansas City held a 24-18 shot advantage following what became a chippy middle frame.

The Oilers power play unit struck again mid-way through the third period, giving the visiting team a two-goal lead at 10:11. Tanner Lishchynsky took the feed from Denomie and skated in from the low slot and beat Redmond to make it 4-2.

With Redmond pulled for an extra skater, Tulsa added an empty net goal from Sadowy at 18:28 to make it 5-2 and secure the win.

Tulsa was 2-for-4 on the man advantage, and Kansas City was 1-of-4 while they out-shot the Oilers 35-24 on the night.

The Oilers play host to the Mavericks on Saturday night at BOK Center for their 2021-22 home opener, with opening face-off scheduled for 7:05 PM.
