VERNON, CT: Ben Schoeneberger is a busy guy.
Schoeneberger had the distinction of playing for two championship teams last season. Prior to the Watertown Wolves’ run for the Commissioner’s Cup, he was loaned to the SPHL champion Knoxville Ice Bears for 23 games before returning to Watertown to finish the season.
Now that the season is over, Schoeneberger – who lead the NCAA Division III in powerplay goals in 2012 while at Castleton – is still on the ice every day. “I teach private lessons for IPH (I Play Harder) hockey,” Ben stated. “After growing up playing at the Bolton Ice Palace in Bolton, CT all the way through high school, it’s a privilege to contribute the skills I’ve learned back to the youth in our sport.”
Keeping in shape is a passion with Scoeneberger, who is also a promoter for ViSalus. Founded in 2005, the company engineers high protein weight management and muscle building products. “I’m a huge fan of green shakes,” says Ben. “I keep up with my diet and exercise big time. I feed the machine
with massive amounts of vitamins and nutrients.”
Schoeneberger finds his involvement with ViSalus to be rewarding from a different perspective. “It’s our goal to donate 1 million shake meals to kids in need,” Schoeneberger said. In a country where one out of six children suffers from obesity, it’s often the most malnourished people that suffer the most from being overweight. “By doing a 2 shakes a day or a bowl of protein super cereal then a healthy meal, you increase protein intake that builds lean body mass and produces fat loss.”
Schoeneberger was asked if he had any hobbies outside of hockey. His answer was at first surprising. “Fencing,” he repiled.
He went on to explain that it was not the type of fencing one might expect. Rather than an epee, Ben wields a post hole digger. “My family owns a fence company,” he stated. “I’ve been working with them since I was a sophomore in high school. It goes a long way towards keeping me in shape.”
Sounds like a blast.
