COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 4-1 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center in Columbus, Ohio. The story of the game was not as much s who scored the goals, but rather who stopped them. Notre Dame netminder Cale Morris was a brick wall turning away 23 of the Buckeye shots., whereas Ohio State netminder Sean Romeo stopped 14.

The first period began as the buckeyes turned the Notre dame net into a shooting gallery due to a penalty by Notre Dame defenseman Justin Wade for checking from behind. Wade received a five minute misconduct plus a game misconduct. Despite Wade’s penalty, the Notre Dame defense led by Morris who stopped 13 of the Buckeyes shots, and coming out of the first period unscathed.
The second period was filed with Buckeye penalties. Ohio State received a plethora of 8 minutes in penalties. Despite the amount of penalties the Buckeye penalty kill stopped the bleeding despite leaving the ice 1-0. The scoring began in the second period with a greasy goal at 2:03 by Notre Dame left wing, Cal Burke assisted by Jordan Gross and Matt Hellickson. Burke slipped one between the post and Romeos pads. Notre Dame opened fire on the Buckeye net shooting 10 shots on net, all but Burke’s goal was turned away by Romeo. The Buckeye penalty kill heroically stopped more goals from being scored. The fact that the score was 1-0 Notre Dame at the end of the second period was a miracle.
The wave of goals started in the third period by Notre Dame’s Dylan Malmquist making it 2-0 Notre Dame at 5:35. Malmquist was assisted by Burke and Jack Jenkins. Ohio State fired back with a rocket from Ohio State defenseman Janik Moser making it 2-1 Notre Dame at 8:35.The Ohio State momentum was cut short with a goal by Cam Morrison at 13:40. Morrison was assisted by Andrew Peeke and Colin Theisen. Theisen would put the final nail in Ohio State’s coffin by scoring an empty netter at 19:25.
The demise of Ohio State was due to their penalties. Although they did not allow Notre Dame a power play goal, they were gassed by the third period. The hero of the game was Morris and the Notre dame defense. Despite being out shot by six goals they managed to win the game.
