Northern UK round-up: Sharks at the double, Scimitars demolish Hawks

UNITED KINGDOM – Solway Sharks kicked off the new NIHL North season with a pair of victories in the league and cup.

Scott Henderson and Struan Tonnar were on target as the Sharks secured a 2-0 home win over Sheffield Scimitars in their opening Moralee D1 fixture.

The Dumfries-based outfit followed up with a 5-3 success at Billingham Stars in the Moralee Cup (North) – Tonnar (3), Henderson and Gordon Horne were on the scoresheet.

Sheffield bounced back from their defeat at Solway with an impressive opening to their cup campaign in the Midlands group.

The Scimitars ran out 9-1 winners against Blackburn Hawks – Vladimir Luka (2) and Stanislav Lascek (2) topped the scoring for the home team.

The Hawks had better luck the previous evening, securing a narrow 5-4 home victory over Widnes Wild – Lee Pollitt (2), Jacob Lutwyche, Matt Wainwright and Michal Novak got the goals.

Whitley Warriors started their defence of the D1 title with a 7-4 victory at Widnes, while Solihull Barons recorded a 6-4 win at home to Nottingham Lions.

Sutton Sting began their Laidler Cup (Midlands) campaign with a 6-4 win at Nottingham Lions 2 – Morgan Glasby (2) led their scoring.
