Northern UK round-up: Comets stun Stars in the cup, Barons progress to the semi-finals

UNITED KINGDOM – Dundee Comets produced a big upset as they recorded a 6-1 victory at Billingham Stars in the NIHL Moralee Cup (North).

Ben Brown (3), John Dolan, Drew Rumgay and Joel Gautschi were on target for the Scottish National League (SNL) club.

Solway Sharks moved back to the top of Moralee D1 after picking up four points from their fixtures against Nottingham Lions and Billingham.

Peter Gapa bagged a hat-trick in a 5-0 home win over Nottingham, and he followed up with another treble as the Sharks ran out 10-4 winners at Billingham.

Iain Bowie also bagged a hat-trick on Teesside as the Sharks regained top spot courtesy of their superior head-to-head record against Whitley Warriors.

Rolands Gritans (3) and Shaun Kippin (2) were amongst the scorers for Whitley in their 7-4 home victory over Widnes Wild.

Solihull Barons found their shooting boots over the weekend, smashing 18 goals during their two games against Sheffield Scimitars and Blackburn Hawks.

They started the weekend with an 8-5 league win at Sheffield and followed up with a 10-2 home victory over Blackburn in the Moralee Cup (Midlands).

The result against the Hawks sent the Barons through to the semi-finals of the competition. They will face the runners-up of the northern group in the last four.

Hull Jets got their Laidler Cup (North) campaign off to a perfect start, recording 10-3 and 11-3 victories over Altrincham Aces in their weekend double-header.

Telford Tigers 2 maintained their 100% record in the Laidler Cup (Midlands) with a 15-2 home win over Nottingham Lions 2, while Sutton Sting triumphed 5-2 at Coventry NIHL Blaze.

Sting were out of luck the following day as they relinquished their unbeaten record in Laidler D2 with a 4-1 home defeat against Sheffield Titans.

Bradford Bulldogs secured their second league win of the campaign with a 7-2 success at Nottingham.

Callum Hill (2) and Aaron Thompson (2) topped the scoring for Dundee Tigers as they kicked off their SNL campaign with an 11-3 win at Kilmarnock Thunder.
