The Northeastern Huskies took on the Harvard Crimson in the Beanpole consolation game on monday at the Garden. Michael Lackey started in net for the Crimson opposed by Ryan Ruck for the Huskies. The Huskies dominated off the opening draw.
They took it straight to Harvard and started to get chances early. The Huskies scored first on a goal from Mike McMurtry who split the Harvard defense for an unassisted goal. Harvard battled hard, but couldn’t get anything going against the Huskies de
fense.
Adam Guadette scored for the Huskies off a pass from Mcurtry, he made no mistake firing it past Lackey. The Huskies continued their pressure forcing the Crimson’s defense to step up big time. Brendan Collier took a slashing penalty that put the Crimson on the power play.
But they had nothing going and the Huskies were able to easily clear the puck out. Dylan Sikura scored for the Huskies with under a minuter to play assisted by Lincoln Griffin and Nolan Stevens. The first period ended with the Huskies leading 3-0 and the shots 11 to 5 in favor of the Huskies.
The second period started out with more of the same, the Huskies continued their domination on the Crimson. But the Crimson had new life since entering the dressing room. They were able to flip the momentum and take it to the Huskies.
Both teams traded chances back and forth, but both goalies stood tall and made difficult saves. The Crimson finally broke through when Ryan Donato ripped a shot from the top circle, Luke Esposito got the assist on the goal. They continued to trade chances back and forth, but they couldn’t get anything through.
The Huskies Garret Cockercill took a Holding penalty at the end of the first sending Harvard to the power play. The first period ended with the Huskies leading 3-1 and the shots 21 to 15 in favor of the Huskies. The third period started with the Crimson taking it to the Huskies early on in the period.
The Crimson continued to get chances, but Ruck stood on his head in the Huskie net. But it was the Huskies who found the net first in the third. Zach Aston-Reese scored for the Huskies assisted by Nolan Stevens and John Stevens.
They continued to trade chances back and forth, but neither team could beat the opposing goalie. Harvard continued to crash the net, but the Huskie defense shut them down. Adam Guadette roofed his second of the game, from Zach Aston-Reese.
The goal put them up 5-1 and put the game out of reach for the Crimson. Harvard continued to press, but it was too late. The Huskies beat the Crimson 5-1 with the final shots 28 to 20 for the Huskies.
“We took a lot of short cuts tonight and you know I think they were ready to play, and we really weren’t” tough words from Harvard’s head coach Ted Donato
Northeastern’s head coach Jim Madigan had this to say about his teams performance “I think we got off to a really good start and were able to major a little better. I thought Harvard did a better job of responding in the second and we couldn’t match it. But you know killing that penalty in the penalty in third really helped us, especially because their power play is so dangerous”.
