Norris out rest of season for Senators, will have shoulder surgery

Josh Norris is out the rest of the season for the Ottawa Senators and will have shoulder surgery on a date to be determined.

The forward missed nearly three months with a shoulder injury. He left midway through the third period of a 6-2 win against the Arizona Coyotes on Oct. 22 and returned for a 5-4 overtime victory against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Jan. 18.

Norris missed 15 games last season.

“Different injury than the last one, same shoulder, different injury,” Senators coach D.J. Smith said Oct. 26. “Is he going to require surgery or not? We’re in the middle of that right now. We’ll know a little more in the next four-five days but it’s long term.”

Norris, 23, scored and played 15:51 of a 5-1 loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. He has three points (two goals, one assist) in eight games this season, the first of an eight-year, $63.6 million ($7.95 million average annual value) he signed with Ottawa on July 15 after setting NHL career highs in goals (35), assists (20) and points (55) in 66 games last season.

Ridly Greig, chosen by Ottawa in the first round (No. 28) of the 2020 NHL Draft, was recalled from Belleville of the American Hockey League. The 20-year-old forward has 23 points (12 goals, 11 assists) in 28 games of his first full professional season.

The Senators (20-23-3) host the New York Islanders at Canadian Tire Centre on Wednesday.
