NIHL Tigers down Barons

Telford Tigers NIHL earned the bragging rights over Solihull Barons with a 9-4 demolition of their West Midlands neighbours at Telford Ice Rink.

Sunday night’s game was an even-handed encounter until the latter stages, when Solihull received a string of penalties in a manic final period.

The visitors never recovered from the losses of Tomas Janak, Ryan Selwood and Robert Eley, as Telford capitalised to hand Solihull their biggest defeat in over two years.Telford Tigers logo

Tigers coach Jason Parry was delighted with his side’s performance – and claimed discipline was a key part of their success.

He said: “I think discipline was definitely a big difference tonight. At the end of the second period, both myself and the Solihull coach were called to the referees’ room.

“He told us that if anyone without a ‘C’ or an ‘A’ on their jersey talked to him, or gathered around him, they would be given ten minute penalties.

“Our boys followed that, they worked hard all game long and got the rewards.”

The first 30 minutes of the game saw both sides exchange goals, with Telford scoring through Adam Taylor and Macaulay Heywood (2).

But with Solihull earning a total of 118 minutes in penalties, Telford went on to dominate, with further strikes from Jets (2), Heywood, Smith (2) and Taylor.

Parry added: “Denis Bell came up big in our end once again with some fantastic saves, but we were able to put our chances away as well.

“Some really well-taken goals from guys like James Smith, Adam Taylor, Macaulay and Karol were the big difference tonight.”

The Tigers NIHL are back in action next weekend, when they host Sheffield Senators at Telford Ice Rink on Saturday evening (5.30pm).
