LANCASHIRE, UK – Telford Tigers are the new leaders in Moralee D1 after picking up four points over the weekend.

The Tigers eased to a comfortable 9-1 home victory against Blackburn Hawks and followed up with a 4-3 success at Hull Pirates.

Sheffield Steeldogs were knocked off top spot after they fell to a 4-1 defeat at Whitley Warriors.

Duncan Speirs (2), Marek Charvat (2) and Stevie Moore were on target for Solway Sharks in their 5-2 home success against Solihull Barons. Charvat completed an excellent personal weekend by grabbing the decider in Solway’s 3-2 win at Blackburn.

Solihull bounced back from their defeat in Dumfries with a 16-0 home victory over Deeside Dragons – Marcus Maynard, Matthew Maurice and Luke Brittle all hit hat-tricks for the Barons.

Billingham Stars collected four points from their weekend double-header against Nottingham Lions, winning 6-1 on the road and 6-5 after overtime on home ice.

Sheffield progressed to the final of the NIHL National Cup after completing a 6-3 aggregate success against Hull.

Telford Tigers 2 remain top of Laidler D2 after winning 6-4 at home to Bradford Bulldogs – Joe Aston (2) and Callum Bowley (2) led the scoring.

Sutton Sting won 4-3 at Bradford and 6-2 at home to Coventry Blaze NIHL. They are level on points with Telford with four games in hand.

Altrincham Aces moved up to third in the table after securing two contrasting victories. Joe Greaves grabbed the deciding goal as Altrincham won 4-3 after overtime at Coventry and they followed up with a 12-0 home win against Deeside Dragons 2.

Blackburn Hawks 2’s miserable season continued as they were beaten 13-0 at Sheffield Senators and 13-1 at Widnes Wild.

PHN’s top two talking points

Rest in peace Frankie

The team at Pro Hockey News would like to take this opportunity to pass their condolences on to the family of Frankie Sherwood. The young Whitley fan sadly lost his battle with cancer in the early hours of Monday morning.

Back in 2016, the Warriors joined forces with Billingham to raise money for Frankie, who had been diagnosed with stage four high risk neuroblastoma.

Frankie’s bravery in the face of his ordeal captured the hearts of people across the North East, with thousands donating to his treatment fund. Our thoughts are with Frankie’s family at this sad time.

Three games in three days unfair on Sheffield and Hull

Sheffield Steeldogs secured their place in the final of the National Cup by beating Hull Pirates over the weekend, but both sides’ hopes of winning the league may have been dealt a severe blow by some questionable scheduling of games.

The Steeldogs’ visit to Whitley on Sunday proved a bridge too far as the hosts recorded a 4-1 victory, while the Pirates were defeated 4-3 at home to title rivals Telford.

Three games in three days is a tough ask for any side and it’s one that could have cost both clubs the chance of winning the most important piece of silverware on offer this season.
