NIHL North round-up: Slater fires Nottingham Lions to their first victory; Gilbert wins it for Wild

LANCASHIRE, UK – Richard Slater bagged the winner for Nottingham Lions as they picked up their first points of the season in Moralee D1 with a 5-4 win at Solihull Barons.

Telford Tigers extended their lead to six points at the top of the table after recording two victories over the weekend.

Jason Silverthorn (3) and James Smith (2) topped the scoring in Telford’s 7-0 home success against Blackburn Hawks, while Adam Taylor weighed in with a hat-trick in their 6-3 win at Whitley Warriors.

Reigning champions Solway Sharks won 4-2 at home to Solihull – Vaclav Kolarik, Marek Charvat, Iain Bowie and Ross Murray got their goals.

Bobby Chamberlain (3), Lee Bonner (2) and Sam Towner (2) led the way for Hull Pirates as they cruised to an 11-1 home success over Billingham Stars.

That result completed a miserable weekend for Billingham who also fell 7-4 at Sheffield Steeldogs.

In the NIHL National Cup, Blackburn won 4-2 at home to Solway and Hull lost 11-6 at Peterborough Phantoms. Sheffield also found Peterborough too hot handle in the NIHL Autumn Cup, as they lost 5-1 on home ice against the NIHL1 South side.

Mikey Gilbert’s goal secured a 2-1 overtime victory for Widnes Wild over Laidler D2 title rivals Altrincham Aces.

Ryan Fraley (2) and Tom Humphries (2) were amongst the scorers for Sheffield Senators in their 7-2 win at Hull Jets. Sutton Sting triumphed 5-2 at home to Bradford Bulldogs, while Coventry Blaze NIHL won 7-2 at Deeside Dragons 2.

Telford Tigers 2 won 8-5 at Deeside and followed up with a 24-3 demolition of Blackburn Hawks 2.

PHN’s top two talking points

Suggesting officials are corrupt is a step too far

The winner of this week’s ‘engage brain before posting on social media’ award goes to the author of this particular gem: “Are Telford winning all their games because they bribe the ref before each game?”

No – Telford are winning all their games because they’re a decent side. Questioning whether NIHL officials are corrupt has to be one of the stupidest things anyone’s suggested for a long while.

Do they make mistakes? Absolutely. Do they take bribes? No – stop being daft. People would do well to remember that without the officials there is no game.

Bowie and Barron deserved winners

The newly-created NIHL Player of the Month awards are an excellent idea, and it’s fair to say the first two recipients fully deserved the accolade.

Iain Bowie enjoyed a superb month for Solway in D1, while Ollie Barron was rewarded for his performances in leading Widnes to the top of D2.

Players give up plenty of their time to entertain fans every week and it’s good to see them have the opportunity to be recognised for their efforts.
