Sheffield Steeldogs extended their lead at the top of Moralee D1 to four points after picking up two overtime wins on the road over the weekend.
Milan Kolena grabbed the decider as Sheffield won 3-2 at Solway Sharks and he repeated the trick the following day in a 2-1 success at Blackburn Hawks.
Solway moved up to second in the table with a 9-1 victory at Nottingham Lions – Stevie Moore (3) topped their scoring.
Luke Brittle scored twice for Solihull Barons in their 5-2 win at home to Whitley Warriors. That result completed a miserable weekend for Whitley who also lost 3-2 on home ice against Nottingham.
Billingham Stars lost 6-4 at home to Hull Pirates, but they bounced back with a 9-4 victory at Deeside Dragons – Chris Sykes and Michael Elder both hit hat-tricks against the North Wales side.
In the NIHL National Cup, Telford Tigers won home and away against Bracknell Bees, while Hull triumphed 2-1 at home to Peterborough Phantoms.
Altrincham Aces still lead the way in Laidler D2 after recording a 4-2 victory at Bradford Bulldogs.
Widnes Wild won 6-1 at Blackburn Hawks 2 and followed up with a 2-1 overtime success on home ice against Sutton Sting.
Callum Bowley (3) led the scoring for Telford Tigers 2 in their 8-6 win at Coventry Blaze NIHL, while Hull Jets secured an impressive 10-4Â victory at Sheffield Senators.
PHN’s top two talking points
Kolena the difference for Sheffield
Milan Kolena was impressive for Telford Tigers in the EPL last season and he’s proving invaluable to Sheffield Steeldogs’ hopes of success this term.
Kolena scored overtime winners twice over the weekend as Sheffield moved four points clear at the top of Moralee D1.
The Slovakian has scored 12 goals with 13 assists in the league this season and is forward to be feared as the campaign progresses.
Hull the eye-catchers in D2
Hull Jets’ 10-4 victory at Sheffield Senators on Saturday moved them to within a point of the top four in D2.
The Jets have won five out of their last six games and the return of forward Kieran Beach from Hull Pirates is a major boost to their hopes of success this season.
Hull may find it difficult to catch the likes of Altrincham Aces at the top of the table, but in this sort of form they could have a huge say in who wins promotion.
