LANCASHIRE, UK – Solway Sharks saw off a determined challenge from Blackburn Hawks to edge a 13-goal thriller in Moralee D1 on Saturday.
Ian Bowie’s hat-trick goal eight minutes from time secured a 7-6 victory for Solway. Blackburn completed a disappointing weekend with an 8-2 home defeat against Telford Tigers – Joe Miller (3) and Jason Silverthorn (2) topped the scoring for the visitors.
Milan Kolena grabbed the winner for Sheffield Steeldogs in their 4-3 overtime success at Billingham Stars. Ed Eaton (3), Luke Brittle (3) and Josh Bruce (3) led the way for Solihull Barons in their 15-3 victory at home to Deeside Dragons.
Whitley Warriors picked up their fifth win in six games with a 5-2 success at Nottingham Lions.
Hull Pirates had a mixed weekend in the NIHL Autumn Cup, winning 4-3 at home to Telford before losing 3-2 after overtime at Swindon Wildcats.
Altrincham Aces opened up a four point lead at the top of Laidler D2 after recording two victories over the weekend. The Aces won 9-6 at Telford Tigers 2 and followed up with a 15-1 home victory over Blackburn Hawks 2.
Sheffield Senators won 6-4 at home to Coventry Blaze NIHL and completed a successful weekend with a 4-3 success at previously unbeaten Widnes Wild.
Sutton Sting also picked up four points, winning 5-0 at Bradford Bulldogs and 5-3 at home to Hull Jets. Bradford had better luck at Deeside, securing a 5-2 win.
PHN’s top two talking points
Telford look unstoppable
Blackburn Hawks hadn’t lost on home ice this season, but Telford Tigers ruthlessly ended that record on Sunday.
The visitors have won nine out of nine in the league this season and looked a class apart from their hosts.
In this sort of form it’s difficult to see anyone stopping Telford from racing away with this season’s title.
D2 is getting interesting
Sheffield Senators’ victory at Widnes on Sunday ended their unbeaten record and blew the D2 title race wide apart.
Altrincham are four points clear of the Senators, with Widnes and Sutton Sting a further point behind.
Wild and Sting both have two games in hand on the Aces and the division looks like it could produce an exciting battle for top spot as the season progresses.
