The National Hockey League and NHL Players Association (NHLPA) announced Friday that the NHL is postponing all international games for the remainder of 2020.
The NHL Global Series included the Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators opening the 2020-21 season in Prague, Czech Republic.
The Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets were scheduled to ice later in the year in Helsinki, Finland.
In a statement, the NHL and NHLPA said, “The NHLPA and the NHL remain committed to maintaining and growing our international presence. We hope that our fans overseas understand the need to postpone the 2020 games, but we look forward to being back with them in 2021.”
The NHL is not alone in cancelling or postponing games set for international venues.
The National Football League cancelled a game scheduled for Mexico and the United Kingdom, and Major League Baseball shuttered two series slated to be held in Puerto Rico and Mexico City.
