READING , PA – NHL clubs made 22 trades, involving 47 players, between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Eastern Time before yesterday’s trading deadline. It marked the sixth consecutive season in which more than 20 trades were completed and a record number of players involved. You gotta love it as a hockey fan.
The Following is a list of the transactions and our evaluation of each move in BOLD.
Anaheim traded LW Travis Moen and D Kent Huskins to San Jose for G Timo Pielmeier , C Nick Bonino and conditional picks.
I’m sure that the Ducks didn’t want to move Moen but they needed some assets. A good move for both teams Anaheim traded C Samuel Pahlsson , D Logan Stephenson and a conditional pick in the 2009 Entry Draft to Chicago for D James Wisniewski and C Petri Kontiola .
I’m shocked that the Ducks made another move like this, especially since Pahlsson is a good player, but getting Wisniewski is important, especially if Scott Neidermayer retires or if Chris Pronger gets moved in the off-season. A good move for both teams Anaheim traded C Eric O’Dell to Atlanta for C Erik Christensen .
The Ducks are at it again. Christensen is a solid player. Should prove interesting. Boston traded C Petteri Nokelainen to Anaheim for D Steve Montador .
Maybe instead of calling this the NHL trade deadline they should have called it Ducks day. A good move getting Montador on Boston’s part. Slight edge to Boston on this one. Boston traded D Matt Lashoff and RW Martins Karsums to Tampa Bay for RW Mark Recchi and Tampa Bay‘s 2nd-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft.
Another good move on Boston’s part. Slight edge to Boston on this one, especially since they got Tampa’s second round pick which should be on the high end of the round. Buffalo traded RW Ales Kotalik to Edmonton for Carolina‘s 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (previously acquired).
Nice move on the part of the Oilers. A good pickup. Calgary traded C Matthew Lombardi , LW Brandon Prust and its 1st-round pick in the 2009 or 2010 Entry Draft to Phoenix for C Olli Jokinen and Phoenix‘s 3rd-round pick in 2009.
A very good move on the part of the Flames. It wont push the Red Wings or the Sharks down as favorites to come out of he west but it sure helps. Edge to Calgary. Calgary traded D Ryan Wilson , D Lawrence Nycholat and Montreal‘s 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (previously acquired) to Colorado for D Jordan Leopold . Another good move on the part of the Flames. Leopold is a puck moving defenseman that they already know is a plus. Edge to Calgary.
Calgary traded G Kevin Lalande to Columbus for Columbus‘ 4th-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft.
The Blue Jackets needed to get a goalie after moving Pascal Leclaire to the Sens. Carolina traded RW Justin Williams to Los Angeles for C Patrick O’Sullivan and Calgary‘s 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (previously acquired). If Williams was healthy this trade might turn out to be a wash so time will tell of that turns out that way. O’Sullivan is a very underrated player. Edge to the Canes.
Carolina traded C Patrick O’Sullivan and its 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft to Edmonton for LW Erik Cole and Edmonton‘s 5th-round pick in 2009. Well, it WAS a good move getting O’Sullivan. Not now. Edge to the Oilers.
Columbus traded G Pascal Leclaire and its 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft to Ottawa for LW Antoine Vermette .
The Senators needed a goaltender badly and they definitely good a good one. The Blue Jackets needed a quality left winger. Good move for both teams. Florida traded D Noah Welch and its 3rd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft to Tampa Bay for D Steve Eminger . Is Eminger trying to set a record for the number of times you can be moved in one season? This is a wash.
NY Islanders traded RW Bill Guerin to Pittsburgh for a conditional pick in the 2009 Entry Draft. Excellent pick up on the Penguins part. A scoring winger that will help take some pressure off of Crosby and Malkin. Big edge for the Pens.
NY Rangers traded D Dmitri Kalinin , LW Nigel Dawes and RW Petr Prucha to Phoenix for D Derek Morris . Coyotes need players, but the Rangers needed a quality d-man if they wanted to go far in the playoffs. Short term it’s a slight edge to the Rangers. Long term Phoenix should benefit more.
Philadelphia traded LW Scottie Upshall and its 2nd-round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft to Phoenix for LW Daniel Carcillo . Big shock. The Flyers move someone with talent for someone who has less talent and can fight. Edge Coyotes.
Phoenix traded G Mikael Tellqvist to Buffalo for Buffalo‘s 4th-round pick in the 2010 Entry Draft. The Sabres needed a goalie due to Ryan Millers injury. Edge Sabres.
Pittsburgh traded D Danny Richmond to St. Louis for D Andy Wozniewski . A wash.
San Jose traded D Kyle McLaren to Philadelphia for Philadelphia‘s 6th-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft. The Flyers get an overpaid minor leaguer who cant skate and cant crack a lineup. You tell me how this one worked out.
Tampa Bay traded G Olaf Kolzig , D Jamie Heward , D Andy Rogers and Carolina‘s 4th-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (previously acquired) to Toronto for D Richard Petiot .
Tampa dumps a lot of nothing for a little of something. A wash. Toronto traded C Nik Antropov to NY Rangers for the Rangers’ 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft and a conditional pick in 2010.
Good move on the part of the Rangers. Antropov should move to wing and will add something to the lineup. Edge Rangers. Toronto traded C Dominic Moore to Buffalo for Carolina‘s 2nd-round pick in the 2009 Entry Draft (previously acquired).
Getting a second round pick for Moore is a good move if the pick pans out one day. Good move for the Canes short term down the stretch. Edge Canes. So, who did well. Overall a good day for the Flames, Rangers, Coyotes, and Leafs. A bad day for the Flyers, Canadiens, Blues and Wild.
I’m a little surprised the Blues didn’t trade Keith Tkachuk. If he had been available I’m certain the Bruins would have gotten him. The Flyers needed and upgrade on D but they hurt themselves as usual by overspending for players. The Wild needed to move Marian Gabork, but with his health and issue, you can understand why they couldn’t move him.
The Flames will push the Sharks and Wings, while the Rangers playoffs hopes look a tad brighter than before. Long term the Coyotes and Leafs will benefit.
