NHL Daily Sweep – 5 January 2016 Mrazek shuts out Devils, 1-0

In the daily sweep of the NHL, we start in Vancouver where the Arizona Coyotes used two goals from Shane Doan to help edge the Canucks, 3-2.

Rookie Laurent Dauphin scored his first NHL goal in the second period for Arizona.

“When you see him smiling and laughing, it’s fun,” Doan said. “When you see him enjoying the game it’s one of those things where you remember when you scored your first goal or got to play in your first game and that excitement. It’s pretty special.”

Louis Domingue, who made 35 saves in the win and the Coyotes find themselves in second place in the Pacific Division.NHL Daily Sweep 3

“It’s been fun. Last year was a tough year,” Doan said. “We are in the hunt at the half way point. It doesn’t really mean anything, but at least we are in it.”

Domingue has been solid in relief of Mike Smith who is down from surgery.

“It’s totally different form last year,” Domingue said. “I know I belong here, I know I can play here and I approach games like I approached games in the [American Hockey League]. I got no worries and I am just trying to do my thing day by day. Last year I was spending most of the time on the bench and when I was playing it was two weeks since I touched the ice so I was always trying to get into a rhythm then.”

Daniel Sedin and Bo Horvat scored for the Canucks.

In Edmonton, Cam Talbot made 29 saves for his first shutout of the season for the Oilers in a 1-0 win over the Carolina Hurricanes.

“I think it’s a sign of maturity when you’re able to do it [play defensively] repetitively, one game after another when you need it,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “Tonight was a start. We checked well. It probably wasn’t the most enjoyable game to watch, it was a chess match. It was tight-checking both ways, there wasn’t many opportunities and we’re going to have games like that, not a lot different than the Anaheim [Ducks] game the other night [a 1-0 loss on Thursday], where we just didn’t get the one goal.”

Cam Ward made 26 saves in the loss for the Canes.

“It was a tight game, there wasn’t a lot of chances either way,” Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. “They got some chances in transition when we turned it over. We had a hard time making plays as the game went along. We started on time, but from that point on, I thought we struggled with execution.”

Andrej Sekera scored at 2:47 of the extra session for the winner.

“When you have the chance you shoot it and I shot the puck, followed the rebound and it went in,” Sekera said. “I had a feeling that was going to be a 1-0 game. They play a good north-south game, they’re very good in all three zones and we knew it was going to be a grind until the end and whoever would break first, would lose.”

In St Louis, Bobby Ryan scored in overtime to lift the Ottawa Senators to a 3-2 win over the Blues.

“Huge win. Huge win,” Senators coach Dave Cameron said. “Falling behind 2-0, found a way to come back and got the win. … And the power play was huge.”

Ryan scored his 200th NHL goal in the third period and added an assist for a three-point night.

Troy Brouwer and Kevin Shattenkirk scored for the Blues.

For St Louis, it was a game of missed opportunities and failed efforts to bury the puck when chances arose.

“We had a chance to bury them and we could have buried them a number of ways,” Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said.  “We could have buried them offensively and we could have buried them defensively and we let them off the hook. … I think the players are right on the mark.”

Andrew Hammond made 36 saves in the win Brian Elliott took the loss on 29 saves.
