The three-game sweep starts in Detroit where Mike Babcock’s return to the Motor City was less than a success. His Toronto Maple Leafs dropped a 4-2 decision to the Red Wings.
After the Leafs’ Mark Arcobello tied the game at two with less than a minute to go in the middle frame, Henrik Zetterberg and Brad Richards scored in the third to give the Wings the win.
Jimmy Howard made 31 saves in the win as the Red Wings continued the preseason without a regulation loss.
James Reimer stopped 26 for the Leafs in the loss.
The San Jose sharks signed Martin Jones in the off season as their new number one goalie and he stopped 18 shots Friday night en route to a 3-0 win over the Arizona Coyotes.
Joe Pavelski had two goals in the win and Tomas Hertl also scored for San Jose.
Mike Smith made 27 saves in the loss as the Coyotes ended their preseason campaign without a win.
In Raleigh, Cam Ward was busy in the Hurricanes’ net in stopping 34 Pittsburgh Penguins’ shots as the Canes beat the Pens, 2-1.
Jordan Staal and James Wisniews scored for the Canes in the first and third, respectively.
Pascal Dupuis picked up the Pens’ lone goal and Marc-Andre Fleury had 28 saves in the loss.
