The three-game sweep of the NHL preseason starts in New York where the Rangers’ Keith Yandle was awarded a penalty shot in the 3-on-3 overtime session and promptly beat the Philadelphia Flyers’ Steve Mason for the game-winner.
Dan Girardi and Chris Kreider scored twice in the third period to rally the Rangers from a 2-0 deficit to the Flyers.
Mark Streit and Wayne Simmonds had scored in the first and second respectively to build that 2-0 lead for Philly.
Mason had 41 saves in the loss and Antti Raanta played the entire game in the Rangers’ net and stopped 27 shots for the win.
In Vancouver, Jared McCann scored on the power play as time was dwindling in the Canucks game with the Arizona Coyotes.
Jacob Markstrom made 32 saves to back up that goal in the win.
The Coyotes’ Mike Smith was in the net for the entire game and made 23 saves in the narrow loss.
In Quebec, the Montreal Canadiens played host to the Pittsburgh Penguins in the Videotron Centre, the home of the QMJHL’s Quebec Remparts. It is also the possible future home of an NHL expansion franchise in the very near future.
The Habs won the game 4-1 in a somewhat hostile environment on goals from Alexander Semin, Lars Eller, Brian Flynn, and Dale Weise.
“It was probably 50/50,” Canadiens center David Desharnais said. “But that’s the way it is here.”
The Pens’ goal came from Beau Bennett.
