The three-game sweep of the NHL from Monday night starts in Detroit, where the Red Wings saw their 13-game point streak come to an end in a 2-1 loss to the Sabres.
Ryan O’Reilly and Johan Larsson scored in the third period in a span of 1:10 to lead the offense.
“Kind of stuck with it. They’re a good team. We tied it and then got a good bounce,” Larsson said.
“Just going to the front of the net and maybe get a rebound and it comes right to my stick,” he added. “As time goes, you get more frustrated, but you’ve got to keep going out there and doing the right things.”
Brad Richards scored the lone goal for Detroit and Petr Mrazek made 28 saves in the loss.
“It is disappointing to get out of this game with nothing,” Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said.
Chad Johnson made 31 saves to pick up the win for the Sabres.
In Columbus, another 2-1 decision ended with the Tampa Bay Lightning edging their hosts, Blue Jackets.
Brian Boyle scored a shorthanded goal early in the third to give the Bolts the lead.
“No one’s complaining about ice time,” Boyle said. “It’s what happens. You play smart, don’t get caught out there too often. Sometimes it’s easier. You get involved in the game and you don’t think as much.”
Ben Bishop made 25 saves in the win and held off the Jackets in the third.
Jonathan Marchessault also scored for the Lightning.
Brandon Dubinsky scored the lone goal for Columbus.
“For us, the difference is small,” Dubinsky said. “We’ve got to find a way to capitalize on all those power plays, then they come down and score a [shorthanded goal].
“We had a lot of chances to tie the game, a lot of chances to take the lead there in the third. It just didn’t go in for us. Margins are little until we start burying some of those opportunities.”
Joonas Korpisalo made his first NHL start in the Jackets net and made 27 saves in a strong performance.
“It was an amazing experience, kind of a dream come true,” he said. “From the beginning, we played good defensively so I got in the flow right away. They took away the rebounds, so I felt pretty confident out there.”
In Boston, the Edmonton Oilers’ Cam Talbot made 47 saves in a 3-2 win in overtime for the Oilers over the Bruins.
“We’re a smart group of players. We know that we stole one here tonight,” Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. “Our goaltender played a tremendous game for us. … For me, that was like a playoff game. They checked every inch of ice, they didn’t let you breathe. … We did a poor job from the tops of the circles out through the neutral zone. We turned a lot of pucks over, and they countered against us.
“But we got a win. We’re not naive enough to think that we are the better team tonight.”
Andrej Sekera scored 41 seconds into the extra session to give the Oilers the win.
Jordan Eberle had a goal and three points in the win and the Oilers have now won six straight.
“We are playing and getting some confidence,” Eberle said. “I think the biggest thing is that there have been a couple nights that haven’t been our best. But our goalie is our answer … that is just what good teams need and we need those guys.”
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins had a goal in the first period to help the Oilers build a 2-0 lead.
“The bottom line is, you know, we fell into a 2-0 hole early on,” Boston coach Claude Julien said. “They got a couple of good breaks there, and we had to fight our way back. They had a good goaltender. I thought we played well enough to win the game, and, you know, unfortunately some of those nights don’t always go your way, so we come out with one when we should have come out with two.”
Matt Beleskey and Brad Marchand rallied the Bruins from the two-goal deficit.
“We didn’t do a really good job of getting in front of him,” Marchand said. “There was a lot of pucks around the net, rebounds and such, and we just weren’t there and battling in front to pick those up. So we have to do a much better job of that next game.”
