NHL Daily Sweep – 14 November 2016

Our three-game sweep of the NHL from Sunday starts in Ottawa where the Minnesota Wild’s Matt Dumba scored with just over a minute left in extra time to lift the Wild to a 2-1 win over the Senators.

“I love it,” Dumba said. “It’s what you dream of when you’re a little kid. Tonight, I seized  of overtime the opportunity. Just lucky it came to me and I saw it there and it just rolled in. It hit something and it threw me off. I just got a piece of it. It seemed like forever me watching it going into the net.”NHL Daily Sweep 3

Darcy Kuemper picked up the win on 35 saves.

“It’s nice,” Kuemper said. “Looking at the schedule going forward, it’s going to pick up. We have a lot more games. It looks like I’m going to be getting more starts more regularly, so it’s nice to get one like this under my belt so I can be confident next time my number is called.”

Kyle Turris was the lone goal scorer for the Sens in regulation.

Craig Anderson took the loss on a busy night with 40 saves.

“It’s a big point,” Senators coach Guy Boucher said. “Those points, they matter at the end. You make [the Stanley Cup Playoffs] or you don’t, by one, two or three points. That point we got tonight is huge.”

Ryan Suter scored for the Wild.

In Vancouver, the Canucks rallied past the Dallas Stars for a 5-4 win.  Vancouver tied the game late and won it extra time on a goal from Markus Granlund after Troy Stecher  forced overtime with a goal at 1L47 of regulation.

“I don’t know if it was a must win but it certainly was a big win for us,” Canucks coach Willie Desjardins said.

Following a dreadful road trip, the win was just the second for the Canucks in their last 12 games.

“It was a tough [road trip] for us, it’s good to be back home and it was a good win for us,” Granlund said. “Everybody in this room is sticking together and playing for each other.”

Brandon Sutter, Loui Eriksson and Bo Horvat also scored for the Canucks.

Ryan Miller made 17 saves in the win.

Patrick Eaves had two goals for the Stars and Antoine Roussel and Lauri Korpikoski added goals.

“We were right there,” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. “We made a little mistake on the empty-net goal on coverage going out to the point. If we played that better, that puck definitely doesn’t go in.”

Kari Lehtonen had 25 saves in the loss.

In Denver, Boston’s Tuukka Rask made 20 saves to lift the Bruins to a 2-0 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

“That’s how you win a road game,” Rask said . “We said after the game, that’s exactly how you want to play on the road. A pretty much mistake-free game, very proud of our effort. I can’t recall any real breakdowns for us. We kept them on the outside and really limited their scoring chances and rushes.

“We kept the puck in the offensive zone and made some plays and created chances. We’re going to be really happy with that. It was a tight game. We couldn’t extend the lead, but that’s all right. We sealed the deal at the end.”

David Krejci gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead and Dominic Moore scored an empty-net goal to seal it.

The Bruins were pushing the offense all match long and Semyon Varlamov had to make 43 saves just to keep it close.

“He was outstanding, the best player on the ice,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. “We have to find a way to get some production for him. We need guys to get to the net and get pucks to the net. We’re not doing it enough.”

Boston outshot the Avs, 23-7, in the second period.

“It was definitely one of our good periods, but we’ve had some periods where we’ve been pretty good and spent some O-zone time,” Bruins coach Claude Julien said. “We’ve got to start getting rewarded for that kind of effort and that kind of dominance.”
