MELBOURNE, Australia – A three-goal first period helped the Newcastle North Stars edge the Melbourne Mustangs this weekend, 4-3.
It was not for lack of trying for the Melbourne side as the Mustangs launched 48 shots on goal.
Dayne Davis stopped 45 of those shots for the win.
Luke Moffatt was the offensive star for Newcastle with a hat trick.
Moffatt’s third goal made the score 4-0 in favor of Newcastle.
At that point the Mustangs rallied with two goals to close out the middle frame in a 2-4 hole.
Patrick O’Kane and Brendan McDowell scored to cut the deficit in half. Tom Voller scored early in the third to make it 4-3 North Stars but that was as close as the Mustangs could make it.
Newcastle sit atop the AIHL table with a 4-0-0 record and 12 points.
