ANNAPOLIS, Md: The Navy Midshipmen thoroughly dominated their in state rival Towson Tigers on Friday night, winning by a final score of 7-2. Navy fired 76 shots on Towson goaltender Jacob Snyder, while Navy’s Thatcher Givens only faced 24 shots.
Navy got on the board first at 2:57 when Alexander Vandenberg scored with assists from Edward Xiao and Conner Hyden. At 17:28 Towson broke through when Simon Gosselin scored with helpers from Nicholas Volonnino and Collin Mercier. Towson called a timeout with 55 seconds remaking while on the power play, but came away empty handed.
The second period had four different Midshipmen scoring five goals, while Towson only scored a single goal. It was Hyden from Navy opening the scoring at 6:15 with Vandenburg getting the assist.
Forty five seconds later, Navy’s Joseph Kelly scored with helpers from Matthew Stamler and Derek Golembrosky. At 9:53, Stamler continued the assault on Towson with an assist from Luke Turk.
Alex Vandenburg got his second goal and third point of the game when he scored with assists from Stamler and Michael Burkard with 3:22 remaining. Towson was able to briefly stop the onslaught at 18:03 when Robert Stadtlander hooked up with Mercier for the goal.
Just three seconds after the Towson goal, Stamler got back on the board for Navy with helpers from Golembrosky and Kelly.
The second period also saw Navy’s goalie Thatcher Givens make a save on a penalty shot taken by Towson’s Ryan Dieter.
Navy continued to pile up the shots in the third period, but only scored one goal while shorthanded with 1:30 remaining. Hyden got the goal with the assists coming from Stamler and Burkard.
Navy remains atop the ECHA standings with a 12-2-1 record and remain at home against Lehigh on Saturday night.
Towson drops to 3-10 and will face Temple at home, also on Saturday.
