Navy sinks Villanova in OT

Annapolis, MD: On Saturday, November 19, 2022 the Navy Midshipmen’s D1 hockey team remained undefeated in ECHA conference play, defeating Villanova 3-2 in overtime. The game was the first of a doubleheader, which saw the Navy D2 team defeat Loyola University of Maryland 6-5 in a shootout. The games were played at McMullen Arena in Annapolis.

The first period ended without any goals scored. Stepan Gorelenkov would open the scoring for Villanova in the second period at 4:32. The goal would be the only one scored in the second. Villanova’s Tim Kobelski would get on the board quickly at 00:16 of the third period with an assist from Matt Arena while on the power play. Navy wouldn’t get on the board until 14:40, when Justin Carl scored with help from Riley Jamieson. Just over two minutes later, at 16:47, Jamieson would setup Thomas Krisztinicz for the tying goal. With just one minute remaining in the overtime period, Navy’s Dayne Smoter would score unassisted to win the game to keep the Midshipmen at a perfect 10-0 in league play.

Goaltenders for the night were Dmitiri Kapranov making 23 saves on 26 shots for Villanova, and Charles Doherty for Navy making 37 saves on 39 shots. Attendance for the game was 215.
