Navy Sings Second, Defeats Army 10-1

ANNAPOLIS, MD: Before a packed house at McMullen Arena, the Navy D1 mens team defeated Army 10-1. The game was dominated by the Midshipmen from start to finish. The night began with the 9 Navy senior players and 2 managers being honored, with their families on hand. Walter E “Ted” “Slapshot” Carter, Jr, Superintendant of the United States Naval Academy dropped the ceremonial  puck between the two service academy captains.

Navy opened the scoring at 3:19 of the first when Derek Golembrosky got on the board with helpers from Joseph Kelly and Matthew Stamler.  Fifty seconds later, Brendan Reynolds kept the crowd fired up scoring what would end up being the game winner, with assists from Luke Turk and Conner Hyden. The combination of Kelly, Golembrosky and Stamler continued the scoring at 5:07, with Kelly getting the goal. The fourth and final goal of the period was at 12:30 by Navy’s Alexander Vandenberg, with assists from Hyden and Stamler.

Army finally got on the board at 2:43 of the second with a power play goal by Austin Pearson while Keller Conrow got the lone assist. Joseph Kelly of Navy responded just 13 seconds later with his second goal of the night. Ross Hogan and John Scaccia had the assists on the Kelly goal. At 5:25, Scaccia and Golembrosky fed Matthew Stamler for Navy’s sixth goal of the night. Fifteen second went by before Andrew Douglas scored off of a Zachary Flagler assist. The third Navy in under a minute was scored at 5:59 when Luke Turk scored with help from Vandenburg and Michael Burkard. Also of note in the second period was that Navy was whistled for six penalties, while Army was only called for one, yet finished the period leading 8-1.

The third period only had two Navy goals scored in the 14th minute, at 14:22 and 14:48, by Conner Hyden and Joseph Kelly respectively. Vandenburg, Turk, Stamler and Golembrosky provided the assists on the third period goals.

Luke Turk started in goal for Navy and made 25 saves on 26 shots while playing 30 minutes. Thatcher Givens played the final 30 minutes and made saves on all 36 shots he faced. Army’s Blaine Madsen started in goal and played the first two periods, with Russell Kraus playing the third period. Army faced a total of 75 shots on goal. Shots on goal were reported using the official ACHA scoresheet, it is noted that the scoreboard at the end of the game had a lower number of Army shots shown.

Army returned to McMullen to face the Navy D2  team on Sunday afternoon, while Navy goes on the road for two games on February 1 and 2.
