ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – The Scarlet Knights of Rutgers defeated the Navy Midshipmen in overtime on Saturday night at McMullen arena to take a split in the two game series. It was Senior Night for Navy as they celebrated their graduating players and team manager. Those being honored were: John Linenger, Tyler Haigh, Hyo Jun Baek and Patrick Brennan.
The first period was a back and forth affair with key goals coming early and late. Rutgers got on the board early, with a goal at 2:10, scored by Ned Richard, assisted by Andrew Yasenchock and Joe Delandro. Navy fought back to tie it up at 10:39, as Andrew Douglas scored with assists from Luke Turk and Matthew Stamler. The Scarlet Knights regained the lead just under five minutes later at 15:37 on a goal from Maatt Langlois from Griffin Privitera and Ned Richard. In dramatic fashion, with 19:59 showing on the clock, Alex Vandenberg tied the game going into the break with assists from Tyler Haigh and Joe Kelly.
The second period was a tight checking period with no goals or penalties. The biggest excitement of the period was on a penalty shot by Rutgers that was blocked by Navy’s Luke Markus.
The third period brought more action early, as Navy took the lead for the first time just 26 seconds in. It was John Linenger scoring on a feed from Derek Golembrosky and Hyo Jun Baek. Rutgers would tie the game and send it to overtime with a goal at 7:15 with a goal scored by Matt Langlois, assisted by Cj Maskut and Matt Sanchez.
At 1:36 of overtime, it was Rutgers Mitch Crenshaw unassisted to seal the victory for the visitors in the three on three overtime format.
Navy’s Luke Markus made 32 saves on 36 shots, while Rutgers Chris Fiorillo stopped 41 of 44 shots.
