ANNAPOLIS, Maryland – In the first of six hockey games at the McMullen arena this past weekend, it was the University of Pittsburgh’s D1 team defeating the United States Naval Academy’s D1 team, 6-4.
It was Pitt getting on the board first with 1:35 left in the first period, on an even strength goal by Jonathan Fair, with an assist from Jacob Tepe. The period ended with Navy taking 13 shots on goal, to Pitt’s 19.
The second period was much busier with a total of five goals being scored between the two teams. Pitt extended their lead with 16:36 remaining when Alex Crilley scored with assists from Oldrich Virag and Austin Tonkovich. Navy answered with 11:47 remaining when John Scaccia scored with assists from Josiah Tolvo and Nathan Hyden. Pitt retook a two goal lead approximately two minutes later when Bernardo Vieria scored with an assist from Alec Bosnic. Virag extended the lead with 3:31 left with assists from Declan Darcy and Ryan Loebig. Derek Golembrosky of Navy cut into the lead with 1:34 remaining with assists from Conner Hyden and Daniel Schoeneman.
Navy scored quickly, just 11 seconds into the third period when Conner Hyden and Daniel Schoeneman fed Joe Kelly for the goal. The Midshipmen tied the game about a minute later when Josiah Tolvo scored with assists coming from Andrew Douglas and Joseph Giannini. Eleven seconds after Navy scored, it was Crilley from Pitt getting what would be the game winner, with a helper from Austin Tonkovich. Pitt’s Alex Crilley would cement the victory with an empty net goal, capping his hat trick with 34 seconds remaining.
Charles Doherty was in net for Navy and faced 54 shots coming away with 48 saves. Matt Snader was in goal for Pitt and made 39 saves on 43 shots.
The two teams would play again at McMullen the following evening.
